John M. Olin Foundation
Established by John M. Olin in 1953, the Foundation continues his commitment to preserving the principles of political and economic liberty as expressed in American thought, institutions, and practice.
The general purpose of the John M. Olin Foundation is to support individuals and institutions working to strengthen the free enterprise system and the American heritage of constitutional government. The Foundation seeks to promote a general understanding of these institutions by encouraging the thoughtful study of the connections between economic and political freedoms and the cultural heritage that sustains them.
The Foundation pursues these general purposes by awarding grants in several fields, including public policy research, strategic and international studies, law and the legal system, and business and economics. Within these fields, the Foundation provides support for research, fellowships, professorships, lectures and lecture series, books, scholarly journals, journals of opinion, conferences and seminars, and, on occasion, televison and radio programs.
The Foundation has been a major sponsor of Washington University's Center for the Study of American Business, directed by Murray Weidenbaum, Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor. The Foundation has also supported Washington University's Center for the History of Freedom, formerly directed by Jack H. Hexter, who was the John M. Olin Professor of the History of Freedom. Through this program, the Foundation has linked the name of John M. Olin with a project he would have found very valuable: the first comprehensive study of the development of modern freedom.
Washington University lost a valued friend and counselor when John M. Olin died on September 8, 1982.
The members of the Foundation's board of trustees are:
