Washington University’s Semester in D.C. program will introduce students to the workings of our nation’s capital through formal course work, an internship and a speaker series, as well as group activities.
The Semester in D.C. academic program is designed to introduce students to major actors in national and international affairs, and to provide knowledge of national policy-making processes and familiarity with major policy domains.
Students will live in a secure facility with peers from other renowned universities and will benefit from the academic mentorship of a full-time Washington University onsite director. Tuition covers 15 academic units, and students are responsible for paying for their own housing, food, travel and other living expenses. The D.C. program is available fall, spring and summer terms.

Internship
A core component of this program is an internship in Washington, D.C., which places business students at the intersections of commerce and public policy. With the assistance of the director, students will secure a four-day-per-week internship that relates to their career goals. Internships are available in business, nonprofit, government, law and several other sectors. The internship supervisor, the program director and Olin faculty will evaluate internship performance.
Courses
All students in the D.C. program will enroll in the Seminar on American Democracy and the Policy Making Process (3 credits). This course will address the major issues and features of the domestic and foreign policy-making processes in the United States.
In addition to the seminar, students will attend a one-credit Washington University Colloquium, which features sessions led by important figures in the fields of government, business, science and the arts. Additionally, business students will design and complete an independent, applied research project under the guidance of Olin Business School faculty. The research enables students to customize the Semester in D.C. studies to their chosen business major(s).
Business students enroll in a total of 15 graded academic credits (and, with permission, no fewer than 12 credits.)
Program Location
The Washington University D.C. program’s headquarters is located in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace building on Massachusetts Avenue, next door to the Brookings Institution and just moments away from DuPont Circle. Students attend most program sessions here.
Housing is in the University of California facility located on Rhode Island Avenue, which is approximately a seven-minute walk from the D.C. program headquarters. This central location allows students convenient access to the D.C. metro system to travel to and from internships. Housing units are four-person, apartment-style and include kitchen facilities.

Outside the Classroom
Under the supervision of the director, students will have the opportunity to explore Washington, D.C. Planned excursions will range from historic landmarks to world-renowned museums.
Cost
The on-campus Washington University semester tuition covers the academic portion of the program; WU financial aid does apply toward the semester in D.C. Living expenses – such as student health insurance, housing, transportation and food – are the student’s responsibility. Housing in the D.C. facility will cost approximately $4,120 and living expenses for a semester in D.C. will be approximately $1,900.
