THE OLIN EXPERIENCE

Create knowledge…Inspire individuals….Transform business. That’s our mission. Throughout our 11 degree and nondegree programs, we emphasize rigorous development of critical thinking, global competence, and analytical communication and collaboration skills – to equip you to compete in today’s complex business world. With alliances in England, China, Brazil, Spain and India, Olin is advancing today’s business world and tomorrow’s global leaders.

Culture
Size matters. We leverage Olin's small size to create a friendly, supportive and collaborative environment. Everyone in your class – including your professors – knows your name. Our students are energized and ambitious go-getters who work hard and study hard. They’re competitive but not cutthroat. In fact, our faculty, staff and recruiters and your classmates want you to succeed just as much as you do.

Network
Our resources are boundaryless. Washington University has a long-standing reputation for scholarship and innovation and provides Olin students with a multitude of options for creative partnership and cross-campus collaboration – through elective courses, dual degrees, independent study and extracurricular activities. You’ll tap into the experience and expertise of our corporate partners and alumni who serve as guest speakers, program panelists and mentors. They share our values, offer counsel on our programs and curriculum, provide financial support – and hire you for internships and full-time positions.

Critical Thinking = Research-Driven Thinking
Companies and organizations are hungry to hire people with strong problem-solving skills. “Research-driven thinking, applied” is our strategy for giving you that competitive edge. It's a way of approaching business problems or issues with the same mind-set used to conduct research. It means learning how to:
  • Ask the right questions and formulate them clearly and precisely.
  • Gather, assess and interpret data.
  • Reach sound conclusions and solutions.
  • Communicate persuasively and effectively.

And who better to teach those rigorous thinking skills than our world-class research faculty? They infuse their innovative, analytical thought process in the learning environment, giving you the critical-thinking skills needed to attack complex business problems and tackle new ideas.

Real-World Experience = Applied Learning
Olin creates powerful connections between businesses and our students – because we know the real-world measure of a program is how your academic experience translates into the workplace. This is where the “applied” part of “research-driven thinking, applied” gets put to the test. Of course, an internship is a time-honored way to gain experience – and our career services team works closely with you to find opportunities that advance your career aspirations and allow you to demonstrate on-the-job aptitude and skills.

But you’ll also find applied-learning opportunities in our classrooms, student clubs and extracurricular activities – allowing you to explore new career options and gain substantive on-the-job experience, valuable mentors and networking contacts.

Applied learning continues in elective courses. Olin’s Center for Experiential Learning (CEL), for example, offers a variety of consulting programs that link you with Olin’s network of Fortune 500 corporations, nonprofit organizations and startup companies.

Taylor Community Consulting Program We pair teams of Olin students with St. Louis-area nonprofit agencies. During a six-week course, your team helps the organization perform more effectively by providing it with short-term, pro bono business counseling and expertise. Participating organizations have included the Children’s Home Society of Missouri, Judevine Center for Autism, Junior Achievement, the Regional Chamber & Growth Association and the St. Louis Area Foodbank.

The Hatchery Develop a business plan of your own or one brought to Olin by individuals interested in a group startup. You’ll work in partnership with entrepreneurs and investors. At the end of the course, teams present their analyses to a group of business startup and venture capital experts. Extracurricular entrepreneurship activities such as the Olin Cup business plan competition are offered by the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, which promotes corporate innovation and the commercialization of new business ideas.

Olin brings the business world into the center of your applied learning experience by taking you outside of the classroom to provide you with integrative, hands-on experiences. Our enormously successful applied-learning approach endows you with the skills and ability to drive creativity and transfer knowledge across your organization – transforming you into a leader who possesses the skills, confidence and ability to communicate a vision and inspire others to become leaders in a time of intense competition and global change.
