Scholars in Business Program
What is it?
Established in 1979, this named scholarship program currently is funded by over 150 individuals and companies who provide over 200 named scholarships to Olin students. Sponsors can direct their support to either MBA or BSBA students, and can name the scholarship in any way they choose (e.g. honoring a loved one, a mentor, or a teacher). The school assigns the awards to students in the fall, provides student biographies to the sponsors, and invites students and sponsors to the annual scholarship dinner in November. The majority of these awards are partial scholarships, with the balance provided by loans, work-study income, and the school's unrestricted gifts from other donors.
What is required to participate as a sponsor?
There are at least three ways to become a scholarship sponsor:
- An annual gift of $2,500 or more. For individuals, this gift also qualifies the donor for membership in the William Greenleaf Eliot Society.
- A term endowed gift of $8,500 or more allows the donor to pre-pay four years of a scholarship at a discount.
- A permanently endowed scholarship can be funded with a gift of $50,000 or more, which can be paid over a period of up to five years. Income from this fund is then used to provide a named scholarship in perpetuity.
Do many of Olin's students need scholarships?
In recent years, over 40% of Olin's undergraduates and over 65% of Olin's MBA students need financial assistance to pursue their educational goals. The average scholarship is over $10,000.
How does this program impact students, sponsors, and the school?
- For sponsors, this is a special way to give. Not only do they see firsthand how their contribution can help someone, they also see their investment pay dividends in the student's educational and personal growth. In addition, some sponsors appreciate this program as a vehicle to honor a family member or friend. Last but not least, several sponsors truly enjoy the special relationship with their assigned students.
- For students, this provides much more than financial assistance. It provides a sense of being part of the Olin Business School community of friends, an opportunity to expand their contacts for advice or friendship, and outstanding role models to encourage them to assist the next generation of students.
- For Olin, this program is essential. Not only does it help us prepare tomorrow's leaders, it also allows the school to attract the most promising students regardless of their financial circumstances.
