FAQ - Instant Messaging: Configuration
Before you can configure Messenger, you will need the following:
- Your username and password -- If you are a new student and have not received your logon information, bring a photo ID to the Computer Lab in Simon Hall (lower level) to pickup your logon sheet.
- A working connection to the Internet -- You will not be able to fully configure the software unless your system can connect to the network.
- Exchange Messenger 4.6 or 4.7 (Windows XP) -- If you are using an Olin system, Messenger is already loaded on your machine. If you are configuring your own system, make sure you review, downlaod, and install the necesssary updates for your system from the Messenger Download page.
Steps to configure Messenger
- Start Messenger.
- From the Tools menu, select Options.
- Click on the Accounts tab.
- To use your Exchange account, do the following:
- Under Exchange Account, Check the box for My contacts include users of Exchange Instant Messaging.
- Under Exchange Account, enter your email address.
- To use your Passport account, do the following:
- Under .NET Passport Account, check the box for My contacts include users of .NET Messager Service.
- Under .NET Passport Account, enter your Sign-in name and password. If you do not have a Passport, click the Sign Up button to create one.
- If you only want to use one account, do the following:
- Under Sign in with this account first, select the account type that you DO want to use.
- Under the account section for the account you DO NOT want to use, uncheck the box for My contacts include users of....
- Click OK to close the window and take you back to the Messenger program.
- Click Sign in to logon to the accounts you configured. You will be prompted to logon for Exchange if you are not using an Olin machine; use your Olin username and password to login.
