How to Access Wireless
Access to the wireless network is restricted to students, faculty, and staff. You can connect using an unencrypted connection (WUFI) or a secure, encrypted connection (WUFI-S). We recommend that you use WUFI-S whenever possible. Select the appropriate link below for instructions. WUFI requires you to logon each time you access the wireless network; WUFI-S will logon automatically without being prompted to do so.
- WUFI (Instructions): Open, unencrypted access. Protocols using clear text passwords are not allowed (Telnet, POP, SMTP, etc.)
- WUFI-S (Instructions): Secure, encrypted access. Automatic logon. Recommended!
Announcement: New WUFI and WUFI-S Wireless Networks
Washington University selected Meru Networks as the provider for the next generation wireless network in Summer 2006. The campus wireless network is now in a transition from the legacy Bluesocket WLAN network to the new Meru WUFI network. Although the two networks will coexist for some time, the School of Business has replaced all of its access points, moving completely to the WUFI network. During spring semester 2007, additional access points will be installed with the goal of providing ubiquitous wireless coverage in Simon Hall. Knight Center coverage will be similarly expanded.
Why Meru Networks?
Meru Networks was selected because their system provided some unique capabilities, such as:
- Higher Capacity: 1 Access Point = 100 Users
- Faster Connections: Users with high-speed 802.11g wireless aren't slowed down by people with older 802.11b equipment/
- Easy Deployment: Meru uses a single channel which eliminates interference issues and simplifies locating access points.
Coverage
Wireless network access is available in several locations around Washington University (including Simon Hall) for devices that support 802.11a/b/g wireless standards. You are required to logon before you can access any resources, using the same username and password used for dial-up access.
Wireless access is provided in the following locations in Simon Hall (building-wide coverage coming during winter break 2006-2007):
- Classrooms
- Computer Lab
- Kopolow Business Library
- Laptop Lab
- Lopata Courtyard
- May Auditorium
- MBA Student Lounge
- Olin Cafe & Student Lounges
Other campus locations for wireless access can be found on the NTS Wireless page.
Support for Legacy Bluesocket Wireless
Although Olin has transitioned to WUFI and retired its BlueSocket completely, other areas of the University may take up to two years to make the move. For assistance with the legacy Bluesocket network, please visit the NTS Wireless page.
