Can I connect to Kopolow Library Resources from remote computers?
Only current Olin students, faculty, and staff may access restricted resources from locations outside of Olin, by license or contract with the database vendors and electronic journal publishers. Although alumni accounts remain active after graduation during a transition period, they are not allowed to access the proxy server.
There are two methods by which you can access these resources from home or another institution or Internet Service Provider (ISP): via our proxy server and via a dial-up connection through Olin's modem bank.
Accessing the proxy server requires that you have an active connection to the Internet. This is your best option for connecting if you have a cable or DSL Internet connection at home, or if calling the Olin modem bank is a long distance call for you. Please see the proxy setup instructions for further information.
If the Olin modem bank is a local phone call for you, this is an option to use to access restricted resources. For information on setting up your dial-up connection to Olin's modem bank, see Modem Setup.
How do I set up my web browser to use the proxy server?
When you configure your browser to use the proxy server, whenever you request a web page, the request is sent to the proxy server, and the proxy server makes the connection on your behalf. Before it does so, however, you will be asked to provide your username and password.
Unless you are only accessing the sites provided by the Kopolow Library, you will not want your browser to always use the proxy server. We recommend that you install a second browser on your computer so that you can have one configured for normal use and another configured for proxy use.
