Working in Groups
Our program strongly emphasizes group work because managers in today's global economy need to be able to build, lead, and participate in teams in order to be effective managers. We assign each student to a group of seven to eight members and assign them group projects in each class. These assignments often have tight deadlines and require the students to work together and to draw on the expertise of the individual team members. In this way, the groups in our program function as a core teaching component of the program. They are more than simply ways of spreading the workload over the course of the program.
To train students to work effectively in groups, we open the program with a week-long class session that includes training in Organizational Design & Change, giving the students the training they need to make the most of the members of their teams. We use the week-long format in order to create the strong personal connections that allow students to get the most out of each other and explore their own strengths and weaknesses as both members and leaders of their teams. Similarly, the Leadership-Managing Power & Influence module is also taught in a week-long format in order to help students examine their leadership skills and understand the way leadership, power, and influence work in organizations. Throughout the program, we encourage the students to examine their group processes and redesign their "organizations" in order to make them more effective.
"I view the Wash U-Fudan EMBA program as a very worthwhile investment. It really expanded my horizons. It was a great learning experience and a mind opener. Not only did I learn from an outstanding faculty, but also from some exceptional classmates. My most memorable moments are the late evenings working on case studies."
