Our Value Proposition - Analytical Rigor and Technical Excellence

The MS in Finance program is offered by the Olin Business School at Washington University. It provides students with a rigorous finance education in a comprehensive set of topics, preparing them for a wide range of positions on Wall Street, as well as in asset management and corporate finance. The technical ability of our MS in Finance students will lie in the middle ground between that of an MBA finance-major and someone with a PhD in finance. And while many of our courses are as highly quantitative as those found in typical financial engineering degree programs, our goal is not simply to narrowly train individuals for back-office, derivative pricing jobs. Rather, our students will be rigorously trained in both asset pricing and corporate finance such that at the completion of our program, they will be able to both price a complex derivative security and understand the economic underpinnings of why such a complex security exists. It is exactly such a balanced pursuit that gives rise to our unique curriculum design.

Our MS in Finance students take a portion of their course work along with our finance-oriented MBA students. This entails a rich set of course offerings, including Investment Theory, Data Analysis for Investments, Advanced Corporate Finance 1 and 2, Risk Management, Fixed Income Securities, Investment Banking, and Mergers & Acquisitions, among many others. Such a comprehensive set of courses is almost unheard of in typical financial engineering programs. In addition, we have developed several new courses specifically designed for our MS in Finance students, including courses such as Stochastic Foundations for Finance, Mathematical Finance, and Numerical Methods & Optimization in Finance.
