Skill Building Activities

A key to a successful career search is optimizing your marketability. To do this, students need to develop and refine their skills to increase confidence, polish their image, and make a good impression.

Workshops

A variety of career-related workshops are scheduled throughout the year for MBA, MSF, BSBA, and MSBA/MACC students. Presenters include outside consultants, alumni and Weston Career Center staff. The Weston Career Center collaborates with student clubs to develop industry-specific workshops to help students gain further insight into areas of interest. Other workshop topics include networking and interviewing skills, cover letter and résumé writing and review sessions. See the Weston Career Center Calendar for dates and times.

Practice Interviews

Practice interviews provide an opportunity for students to practice their interviewing skills in a realistic setting and receive immediate, professional feedback on their performance. Your interview is recorded on DVD for you to review and evaluate afterwards.

Practice interviews are scheduled throughout the fall semester with additional availability in the spring. Students can schedule an interview with an advisor throughout the year. Contact the Weston Career Center Front desk at 314-935-5950 for an appointment.

We also offer online practice interviews using InterviewStream. Using your computer and a web camera, which can be checked out from the CRL, you are able to practice your interview skills and have it recorded for an advisor, or anyone else, to review at any time. An optimized kiosk version is also available in the CRL, appointment required.

Cover Letter and Résumé

The objective of résumés and cover letters is to land an interview. They should create a favorable first impression and make the employer want to talk to you. Take the time to carefully craft your business correspondence and you will reap the rewards later.

Evaluating Offers

Whether you find yourself in the enviable position of comparing several attractive job offers or deciding whether to accept or reject a single offer, salary will no doubt be one issue in your decision process.

Salary is not a stand-alone issue but rather an integral part of the larger context of the job search, employers, and organizations. As such, we want to address the salary issue from two points of view: evaluating and negotiating. In order to evaluate and negotiate a job offer, you need both information and skills.

Information comes from research -- about typical salaries and salary ranges in the functional area, industry, and/or company; about cost-of-living in various locations; about how closely the offer(s) matches your goals, interests, and values; about benefits, bonuses, commissions, and perks.

The skills you need are primarily communication skills -- how you communicate your qualifications, value, benefits, and performance to employers in exchange for status, position, money, and extras.
