Phase Five: Get the Position: Preparation and Interviewing
If you have ever played a competitive sport, you know the most critical part of the game occurs even before you step foot on the field. Hours spent practicing fundamentals increase your chances of victory on the day of the game. Careful preparation and repeated practice develop self-confidence. The more you prepare, the more you practice, the more self-confidence becomes second nature in challenging situations when it is needed the most.
The same principle applies to the job interview. The candidate who gets the job is not necessarily the one most qualified; often it is the one best prepared. Preparation leads to quiet confidence; quiet confidence speaks volumes about relevant competence.
But job interviews can be intimidating, especially when entering the job market for the first time. How do you practice the fundamentals that lead to self-confidence and success?
Five critical steps help you to prepare:
- Know yourself - what you are interested in doing
- Know the job you want
- Research the company and industry
- Prepare specific questions to ask at the interview
- Practice interviewing until you feel comfortable and confident
In the resources below, you will find information on these steps to prepare for interviewing.
